Experts hail use of geospatial technologies in disaster relief efforts

At the recently held 2012 International Disaster Conference and Exposition, technology innovators and public sector officials gathered to discuss the latest trends in disaster preparation, response and recovery. One theme that emerged throughout the proceedings was the need for, and value of, geospatial content management solutions.

Two years after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastated the Caribbean nation of Haiti, disaster relief experts involved in the aftermath were on hand at the IDCE to share the lessons learned from their experiences.

"This year's International Disaster Conference and Expo provided us with a great opportunity to share our involvement in Haiti and promote the use of geospatial photo technology for supporting disaster response efforts," one technology solutions provider commented. "Giving responders the ability to quickly capture and share geo-reference photographs that deliver on-the-ground situational intelligence is extremely useful in coordinating and directing resources."

Effective geospatial content management is instrumental in exchanging information between the wide array of stakeholders and responders often involved in disaster relief efforts. To keep the industry moving forward, conference attendees suggested that they will focus on expanding data integration capabilities and improving the interoperability of currently deployed technology.
